Raising Confident Daughters
6 September 2026 · Global Women's Week
Confidence is built through experience, not compliments alone.
Praising effort and process ('you worked hard on that') rather than only outcomes ('you're so smart') helps build resilience — children praised for fixed traits often become more risk-averse, afraid of losing the label.
Letting children struggle with age-appropriate challenges, rather than rescuing immediately, builds genuine self-efficacy — the felt sense of 'I can handle hard things' that no amount of external praise can substitute for.
Modeling matters more than lecturing. Daughters watching a parent set boundaries, pursue goals, and handle setbacks with self-compassion absorb far more than any direct conversation about confidence.
Quick tips
- Praise effort and strategy, not just innate traits like 'smart' or 'talented'
- Allow age-appropriate struggle instead of stepping in immediately
- Model the confidence and self-compassion you want to teach
