Investing 101: Getting Started with Confidence

10 September 2026 · Global Women's Week

Investing isn't about picking the perfect stock — it's about starting, and starting early.

Women are statistically strong investors when they do invest — often outperforming men over time by trading less and holding steadier — the bigger gap is simply that fewer women start investing at all, often from a lack of early exposure.

For most people, low-cost index funds are a more reliable foundation than picking individual stocks. They spread risk across the market rather than betting on any single company's performance.

Time in the market matters more than timing the market. Starting small and consistently, even with modest amounts, tends to outperform waiting for the 'right moment' to invest a larger sum.

Quick tips

  • Low-cost index funds are a strong starting point for most beginner investors
  • Consistency beats trying to time the market
  • Start with whatever amount you can, even small — starting early matters more than starting big
