Building a Sustainable Fitness Routine at Any Age
28 September 2026 · Global Women's Week
The routine that lasts beats the one that's perfect for two weeks and then abandoned.
The fitness industry sells intensity. What actually changes long-term health is consistency — and consistency comes from a routine that fits into a real, busy life rather than demanding a life be rebuilt around it.
Strength training deserves more attention than it usually gets, especially as estrogen changes with age affect bone density. Two sessions a week, even short ones, meaningfully protect long-term strength and bone health.
Movement doesn't have to mean a gym. Walking, dancing, gardening, and playing with kids all count. The goal is accumulating movement across a week, not hitting a single 'perfect workout.'
Quick tips
- Start with a frequency you can sustain for a year, not a week
- Strength training twice weekly supports bone density, especially past 40
- Pair a new habit with an existing one (e.g. a walk after lunch) to make it stick
